Herbolario Migrante

The “Herbolario Migrante,” or Migrant Herbalism in English, was a project facilitated by Cinthya Santos-Briones. The focus of this project was the Herbs that have migrated with us from our home country, thus the name Migrant Herbalism. Through this project, the participants talked about and reflected on various types of herbs that they grew up with as children in their home countries, along with the stories and uses passed down to them. Throughout the project, the participants learned how to make cyanotype photographs on cotton paper using various herbs, which they later embroidered. They also developed a “Recetario,” a book in which they wrote recipes, stories, and tales about what their grandparents told them relating to these plants and their healing power. The project concluded with an exhibition at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Bay Ridge Branch, where the participants’ work was presented and stories.

PAST PROGRAMS

Arte Itinerante

Arte Itinerante was a project that used art to generate dialogue among Sunset Park residents. The project was designed as a mobile art classroom that could be transported from one location to another to offer art workshops that were accessible to all. The idea of a mobile art classroom comes from Latin American and Asia traditions where people use makeshift carts that move from one place to another to sell all sorts of items. Following that tradition, Arte Itinerante offered passers-by the opportunity to create an art piece and serve as a safe space for the community to express their views and engage in dialogue through art.

Dialogando

“Dialogando” was a program that used English Conversation Circles to create a space for English language learners to develop their language skills and learn how to self-advocate for their rights. The conversations were centered on the specific needs and everyday experiences of participants.

iChange

Inspiration for Change (iChange) was a bilingual program that offered youth a space to express themselves through art-making. Throughout the course, youth learned basic art techniques, developed their creativity through hands-on exercises, and identified an issue in the community they wanted to speak about through their art. This program sought to encourage dialogue among and with youth in Sunset Park, thus ensuring that youth voices are heard.

Open Streets

Voces Ciudadans In collaboration with Sunset Park BID, Streetlabs and play.groundnyc was able to provide art, physical activity and creative play to children and families during Open Street hours on 5th ave.

Workplace Safety

The Workplace Safety Program ensures that immigrant workers know their rights in the workplace. The project sought to raise workers’ awareness of the dangers they could face in the workplace and provided practical tools for workers to work in a way that prevented injuries and deaths. The program empowered workers to exercise their rights and create health and safety committees addressing workplace issues. This program concluded with members receiving an OSHA certification.
